Imagine getting up in the morning and swimming 750m, cycling 20km and running 5km – all before breakfast. Sounds hard, doesn’t it?
Now imagine doing that every day for 50 days in a row!
Well, Austchrome HSEQ Manager Shaun Brown must be a glutton for punishment, because he has undertaken the epic challenge of completing 50 sprint distance triathlons in 50 days.
It’s not all pain and no gain, however. Shaun’s efforts will raise money for Mackay charity Australian Street Aid Project, which provide services and employment opportunities to Australia’s homeless population.
“I am obviously a little bit strange and some might say crazy, to take on this challenge,” Shaun said.
“Triathlon as a sport has changed my life in so many ways for the positive.
“I don’t have a lot of money but I do have some spare time and energy to give back to the community I love.”
Shaun said his wife, who works at the local PCYC, sparked the idea to donate to the Mackay-based charity.
“I’ve heard some terrible stories about people and even entire families ending up without a place to live,” Shaun said.
“It’s not just in the cities and it can happen to anyone at any time. People everywhere are being affected by homelessness.
“It’s not only from the housing crisis but from domestic violence, relationship breakdown and mental illness.
“As a society, we have to look at the issue and ask when will we address this as a matter of urgency.”
Already well on his way to hitting his $10,000 target, Shaun said raising awareness was as important as raising funds.
“It’s great to have so many people supporting the cause and donating,” he said.
“But I hope this can also inspire people to get involved, spread awareness about this crisis and have the conversation.”
“If everyone can do a little bit, it can make a big difference.”
We’re very proud to have Shaun as part of the Austchrome team. As such, we have sponsored his amazing efforts for this great cause.
